NUT/UCU Conference report November 2008
This conference report describes the main speakers on the day who included Geoff Stanton, Graham Lane, Martin Allen, Donald Rae Julian Gravatt and Peter Hawthorne. Christine Blower AGS, welcomed participants to the joint NUT/UCU conference and emphasised the positive relationship both unions had, especially in relation to agreeing a joint 14-19 policy. The conference report concludes with how the two unions might continue to work together on 14-19 policy.

This response outline the nut’s view that it has sought consistently for the return of local democratic control of 14-19 provision to local authorities. In this the response the nut argues for an audit to take place to ascertain the capacity of local authorities to take on the strategic role of commissioning 14-19 funding and to deliver the2013 14-19 entitlement.

This policy response emphasises the NUT’s 14-19 policy which calls for a coherent unified system of 14-19 qualifications system. The Union has long-campaigned for a single Diploma structure.

This consultation is the response to the government’s consultation on extending the compulsory system of education post-16. The NUT argues that whilst increasingpost-16 participation is a crucial part of increasing levels of the workforce, any focus on sanctions and criminalisation for failing to participate would be counter-productive.
