The Union established a political fund in 2008 following a ballot of members.  The Union is not affiliated to a political party and is independent of any political parties.

There are statutory rules governing union political funds generally which the Union is required, by law, to adopt with the approval of the Trade Union Certification Officer.  These rules can be accessed through the links below.

Additionally, the Union has its own rules limiting the use of an NUT Political Fund within the broader framework of the statutory rules.  The NUT Rules are designed to ensure the continued party political independence of the Union.

In 2012, Annual Conference agreed to a limited extension of the use of the Fund and this decision was ratified by a ballot of members, as required by the Union’s Rules.

The three main changes to the use of the Fund as agreed by the ballot of members are as follows:

• the extension of campaign activities against political parties and their candidates who promote racist, fascist and other views beyond election periods;
  
• to encourage members or groups of members to register to vote; and
  
• the funding of attendance by senior officials to party conferences where they can pay an important part in promoting the voice of the profession in political circles.
