The Tax Refund Company has been providing a tax code review service for the NUT since 1998. Since then NUT members have received £6.7million in tax refunds from HM Revenue. The Tax Refund Company says that few members thought they were due a refund when they applied as most teachers assume that their employer is deducting the correct amount of income tax through PAYE.  

However, for those providing the requested information, the average refund is currently £305, whilst the highest individual refund is over £6,350.  

Over 75,000 members have applied for the tax code review service and it continues to be extremely successful. If you have not used it yet, you may wish to give it serious consideration. The service is free if you do not receive a refund. If you receive a refund, the Tax Refund Company charges 41 per cent commission for its services.  

The Tax Refund Company asks you to note that:

• For every £1 refunded, you receive 59p
• The service is entirely free if you do not receive a refund
• You keep all future savings through a new tax code
• It's a totally confidential service - in the rare event they discover you owe tax, they will only inform you
• Over 60% of NUT members who provided the requested information received a refund
