NUT disappointed by Closure of Newport School
Minister’s decision to close St David Lewis Voluntary Aided Roman Catholic Primary School, Newport deeply saddens Wales’ largest teaching union.
"The Minister's decision to close St David Lewis RC Primary School is very disappointing indeed," said David Evans, Secretary NUT Cymru.
"For many years teachers and support staff have worked very hard and
successfully to give the children in the Bettws area of Newport a good education. The most recent Estyn inspection report was a good one. This is a credit to all the staff at the school."
"The school has a very high proportion of children from a deprived background and a high percentage of children with special educational needs. Both these areas were highlighted in the Estyn report as being particularly strong areas in the school's provision."
David Evans added "NUT Cymru believes that all schools have an important role to play in the community and St David Lewis has served its community well."
"Our task now is to work with Newport City Council to ensure that all children continue to receive the education that they deserve and that the teachers who have worked so hard at the school will find that their interests too are protected."
