World Cup 2010
With World Cup fever building, all eyes are going to be on the host nation South Africa over the next month.
The NUT is proud to support the following campaigns and initiatives centred around the World Cup. We hope that, even if your team doesn’t win, the tournament will help deliver lasting change and success in tackling poverty and racism and delivering education for all.
1 Goal
72 million children worldwide are still out of school and we need to remind world leaders of their promise to get every child in to school by 2015. The 2010 World Cup takes place in South Africa - for the first time ever on the continent that is home to almost half those who miss out on an education.
Together with footballers such as Rio Ferdinand, David James and Gary Lineker, we hope to achieve 1GOAL - a renewed global commitment to education for all. World leaders need to do a lot more to reach the 2015 deadline and we need your help to persuade them! The NUT actively supports this campaign and urges you to participate during the World Cup, from 11th June to 11th July, when you and your school can help ensure that the promise of education for all by 2015 is delivered.
It is really simple to be part of 1GOAL. Every school that signs up gets a FREE pack of materials via: http://www.sendmyfriend.org/one-goal/order-schools-pack
Tackle poverty in South Africa
To prepare for the 2010 World Cup, South Africa has invested billions of pounds in tourist facilities. Yet millions of South Africans today suffer from appalling living conditions. Whole communities are denied access to essential public services, and many thousands of people have been evicted from their homes.
War on Want's grassroots partners, a growing movement of South Africans, are leading the campaign to improve the lives of poor South Africans.
You can help South Africans win their right to decent, affordable housing and basic services by signing up to the 'call to the South African High Commission' at www.waronwant.org/tacklepoverty.
Tackle racism
Show Racism the Red Card have produced, with the NUT’s support, a poster of England’s World Cup team. Please click image below to download a copy of the poster for display in your school.
Football and Freedom - Exploring South Africa’s History, Culture and Context
The NUT and Action for Southern Africa (ACTSA) have developed a resource pack around the 2010 Football World Cup in collaboration with Kick It Out, the London Borough of Haringey, Link Community Development and a group of NUT teacher members with an interest in international development and southern Africa.
We hope it is a resource that will enable you to explore South Africa’s history, culture, and development successes and challenges in a way that will get the interest and attention of pupils and increase their knowledge and learning. While the pack has been produced for the World Cup year, most of the materials can be used at any time for teaching about South Africa.
The pack can be downloaded here: http://www.teachers.org.uk/footballandfreedom
