No to Powys Proposals - press release
Commenting upon the proposals for review of secondary education in Powys, NUT Cymru indicated its opposition to any move for wholesale closures of up to seven high schools. Wales Secretary David Evans said:
"The financial pressures imposed upon secondary schools in Powys have been a significant issue for several years. Whilst the NUT would accept that a review of provision is necessary we would oppose any plans to replacing secondary schools with so called 'learning centres' or centres of excellence'. "The NUT is committed to securing a good local school for every child and community. Powys appears to be heading completely in the opposite direction and have provided information on proposed models for discussion before any meaningful discussion or consideration of those plans has taken place with the appropriate stakeholders.
"Modernisation of the secondary sector is one thing. The wholesale closure of schools throughout the County is another. The NUT will always oppose any scheme that threatens the jobs and livelihoods of its members, that removes a focal point for a community and harms the educational opportunity for the pupils that it seeks to serve."
