Early years: ensuring the best start
There are a number of current Government initiatives in the early years sector which will have a significant effect on the working conditions and practices of teachers. Some issues may lead directly to job losses and the closure of settings.
The NUT's current early years campaigns are:
Early Years Single Funding Formula
- In most local authorities the introduction of the EYSFF in April 2010 will mean a significant reduction in funding to maintained nursery schools, which in many cases could lead to their closure.
Extension of the Free Entitlement to Early Education for 3 and 4 Year Olds
- This has led to increased contact time for many nursery class teachers, a reduction in or removal of break times and, in many settings, the removal of time for all staff to meet together for planning and assessment purposes.
Extension of the Free Entitlement to Early Education for 2 Year Olds
- Where places in maintained nursery provision are not filled by 3 and 4 year olds, they may be filled by two year olds under the extension of the free entitlement.
Early Years Professional Status
- The introduction of Early Years Professional Status is a threat to the role of the qualified teacher in all sectors offering early years provision and may lead to redundancies and job losses
