Sixth Form College NUT News
NUT MEMBERS ENDORSE PAY AGREEMENT
The teacher unions have reluctantly accepted a phased 2.3 per cent pay increase for teachers in sixth form colleges for 2009-10.
The NUT consulted members by ballot. Although the phasing of the increase was far from satisfactory, members voted by a clear majority in favour of acceptance. The NASUWT and ATL have also now endorsed the agreement.
Teachers will receive a 1.5 per cent increase backdated to 1 September 2009 rising to 2.3 per cent from 1 April 2010, so that next year’s increase will be based on the higher figure. The pay deal is worth 1.84 per cent over the year.
The negotiations also secured valuable agreements on part time teachers’ pay and working hours (full details at www.teachers.org.uk/6fcs) and on joint discussions on workload and working time issues.
Next year sees changes in the sector as colleges take on a new legal status. While remaining independent institutions, they will be obliged to work closely with LAs on issues such as admissions. The NUT will continue to work to support members in this changing environment.

GTCE and IfL
The DCSF has said it will not reimburse the GTCE fee to sixth form college teachers who join the GTCE.
The unions and college employers are seeking an extension of the agreement to allow teachers to delay registration with GTCE or IfL to allow discussions to continue.
Further advice will be issued soon.
Christine Blower, General Secretary of the National Union of Teachers, said:
“Phasing this agreement was not in our view necessary. In these difficult times, however, it is important that pay scales in colleges will continue to match those for schools.”
